  But for how long?

  "I don't like this," I say.

  "Neither do I," Riley says. "I'm sure your dad will stop ignoring you once things settle. He probably wants things to be stable for you. And maybe he's not sure what to think of your powers yet."

  "I hope so. I don't know what to think. Now we've replaced one coven for another."

  "Nightsides never stay together long. They're too powerful. There is no system," Riley says, looking straight ahead. "No order. With Truebloods, older vampires are on top. With Nightsides, everyone's a superstar."

  "And that means infighting," I say. I can see it now.

  "Yes."

  "What do you think the Nightsides want with Moon's Peak?" I ask.

  Riley stays silent for a long time. His eyes darken like his thoughts are going somewhere dark. "Whatever happens, it's best that the Beaumonts are gone." He pushes out those words as his shoulders drop towards the center of the world.

  He's full of guilt. Riley's gone against the only family he's ever had.

  And there's nothing I can do to soothe him.

  "I'm sorry," I blurt.

  Riley forces a smile at me. "Hey. We're in this together. Whatever happens, at least we've got each other and no one's forbidding us to date."

  Warmth fills my chest, but only for a second. The beach seems to go on forever, curving around the ocean. I'm not so sure about that. Have we just replaced one evil for another?
